The music of the Basel-based VEIN Trio is inherently amenable to large instrumentations. The pianist, composer and arranger Michael Arbenz, who operates at the crossroads between jazz and classical music, orchestrates compositions by the trio members in such a way that the flexibility, unpredictability and interaction of the music remain intact even within the context of a large band.
In his composition Symphonic Bop goes Big for jazz trio, big band and orchestra, commissioned by the Basel Sinfonietta, possibilities of sound and structure unfold that are only possible in this unique constellation.
The different emphases of the three groups involved serve as the musical basis: the contemporary classical profile of the Basel Sinfonietta, the jazz excellence of the NDR Bigband, and the flexible, chamber-music jazz style embodied by the VEIN Trio.
