In the inspiring setting of the Museum Tinguely, the Basel Sinfonietta explores the mysterious aspects of music and sound. For the art of composing, too, is a kind of ceremony.
In his orchestral work "Mystère de l'instant," the French composer Henri Dutilleux set out to capture the mystery of the moment. Ten sequences represent a series of snapshots, each focusing on a different aspect of the sonic material. The term "mystery" must be understood in its broadest sense. What secret in the creative process allows an idea to manifest itself?
Louis Andriessen, a key figure in the contemporary Dutch art scene, wrote his "Mysteriën" for the Concertgebouw Orchestra to mark its 125th anniversary. This was a sensation, as Andriessen had been part of a group of troublemakers in 1969 who disrupted a concert by the orchestra, finding its programming anti-modern and reactionary. Andriessen only accepted the commission, which had been offered to him several times, after having a dream about his late father, Hendrik, who had himself composed works for the Netherlands' most prestigious orchestra.
The concert will open – after a short hors d'oeuvre by Henri Dutilleux – with a piece commissioned by the Basel Sinfonietta from the young Polish composer Anna Sowa, who lives in Basel, which aims to confront the live sound of certain orchestral instruments with electronics.
