As a conductor in demand worldwide, Jessica Cottis is the perfect exegete for a program that focuses on highly diverse female composers. The evening's motto makes reference to the «Annunciation Triptych» by Liza Lim. Like Cottis, Lim is originally from Australia, and her music is often a synthesis of contemporary means of expression and traditions from the Far East. In the three-part work from 2019/22, Lim pays tribute to three great female figures: the important ancient Greek poet Sappho (Bioluminescence), Saint Mary (Transcendence after Trauma) and Fatimah, the only daughter of Mohammed, the founder of the Islamic religion (Flowers of Jubilation). The last part of the triptych also features a soprano voice, and even the audience is involved in the singing.
In «Sogno di Stabat Mater» from 2008, on the other hand, the Ural-born Lera Auerbach virtuosically overwrites tradition, specifically the famous «Stabat Mater» by Giovanni Pergolesi. This is an abridged version of the «Dialogues with Stabat Mater» from 2005 for solo violin, viola and vibraphone, a version created at the request of Latvian violinist Gidon Kremer.
With «Within Her Arms» from 2009, the British artist, who lives in the USA, commemorates her mother in the form of laments from the English Renaissance.
Another much-anticipated piece is a new work by Helga Arias. The Swiss-based Spaniard studied with Beat Furrer, among others, in order to explore noise-like sound actions, the latest technologies and electroacoustics in her work.
