#MeToo, Hitchcock

World premiere of Moritz Eggert's new film score for Hitchcock's silent film "Blackmail" on March 3rd at Burghof Lörrach

With «#Metoo, Hitchcock», we present the world premiere of a new film score by Moritz Eggert for Alfred Hitchcock's silent film classic «Blackmail».

«Blackmail» is a British thriller from 1929, masterfully directed by Alfred Hitchcock. Although Hitchcock chose to release the film as his first "talkie", the silent version of the British thriller was far more popular – for the simple reason that most cinemas were not yet able to show films with sound.

Thematically surprisingly relevant, Hitchcock tells a veritable #MeToo story set against the backdrop of the era. He has his protagonist successfully fight against various forms of male harassment and blackmail – and he does so in powerful images that still impress today.

Moritz Eggert, who describes himself as the "Bad Boy of New Music," has written a deliberately humorous and, above all, emotional score "from the gut" for Hitchcock's classic, which develops artistic independence and at the same time represents a tribute to the film composer Bernhard Herrmann, whom Eggert deeply admires.

With "#MeToo, Hitchcock," the Basel Sinfonietta continues its tradition of film music. In 2007, in collaboration with ARTE, they released a recording of Dmitri Shostakovich's reconstructed original score for the 1931 silent film "Odna – Alone" by Grigory Kozintsev and Leonid Trauberg. This was followed in 2011 by a recording of Shostakovich's score for the 1929 film "New Bayblon" on the Naxos label.

With their first collaboration with Moritz Eggert, the Basel Sinfonietta opens a new chapter in this tradition.
