The young Swiss conductor Laurent Zufferey will become the new Assistant Conductor of the Basel Sinfonietta.
Laurent Zufferey will take up the position of Assistant Conductor in the orchestra specializing in contemporary music until the end of the 2022/23 season, working closely with Principal Conductor Baldur Brönnimann.
Laurent Zufferey, born in Sion, Switzerland in 1993, has been appointed the new Assistant Conductor of the Basel Sinfonietta. He was selected by a search committee following a public call for applications to serve as assistant to Principal Conductor Baldur Brönnimann.
Laurent Zufferey studied at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester (Great Britain), where as part of his studies he worked as an assistant to the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, collaborating with renowned conductors such as Vasily Petrenko, Omer Meir Wellber and Joshua Weilerstein.
Laurent Zufferey can already look back on collaborations with renowned orchestras such as the Orchestre Nationale de Metz, the Stavanger Symphony Orchestra, the Manchester Camerata, the Sofia Philharmonic, the Augsburg Philharmonic, the German Armed Forces Music Corps, the Moravian Philharmonic, the Sinfonietta de Lausanne, the Graubünden Chamber Philharmonic and the Argovia Philharmonic.
In May 2021, Laurent Zufferey won the Audience Prize at the Tonhalle Conducting Academy, directed by Paavo Järvi. In September 2021, he was appointed Music Director of the Swiss ensemble Valéik. And in November 2021, he made his debut at the KKL Luzern with Loredana and the Red Bull Symphonic Orchestra.

Laurent Zufferey will support Principal Conductor Baldur Brönnimann in rehearsals and will help shape concert projects of the Basel Sinfonietta with numerous world premieres and Swiss premieres.
