Martin Jaggi

Swiss composer Martin Jaggi has written a new work for the Basel Sinfonietta

Commissioned by the Basel Sinfonietta, Martin Jaggi (*1978) has written a work for traditional Bolivian instruments and orchestra, which will be premiered in the 2nd subscription concert on October 2nd.

In his work entitled «Tarr», written on behalf of the Basel Sinfonietta, the Swiss composer Martin Jaggi explores interferences that are created in Bolivian music by deliberately unevenly tuned instruments and are referred to as «Tarr».

In «Tarr», all the pitch material is derived from the different tunings of the sikus and tarkas (pan flutes and a type of recorder) used. Various orchestral groups play in different microtonal tunings, shifting against one another. From these shifts, the traditional instruments repeatedly emerge, only to be absorbed again by the orchestra.

Tarr is created through this interplay of layers moving in a manner similar to tectonics.

The composer Martin Jaggi, who is also a cellist and member of the Basel Sinfonietta, has been working as a lecturer in new music and composition at the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music at the National University of Singapore since 2016. He lives in Singapore with his wife and two children and regularly commutes between Europe and Asia.
