As part of a tour of Belgian music centres, the Basel Sinfonietta presents music ranging from polyphonic parody to the bursting sounds of a crashing concert grand piano at the DeSingel International Arts Centre in Antwerp.
With San Francisco Polyphony, the Austro-Hungarian composer György Ligeti also lets individual voices be heard in his characteristic micropolyphony.
With Losing the Red Queen's Race, Swiss composer Mauro Hertig has the orchestra play a game that cannot be won. A musical parody of the Red Queen hypothesis, according to which all organisms are subject to evolutionary pressure.
And then a grand piano falls from the sky! The impact causes the instrument to burst and shatter, captured in image and sound. This is all part of the concept of Danish composer Simon Steen-Andersen and his Piano Concerto.
